Isis Sio Injured in San Bernardino Upgraded, Still in Serious Condition
By David A. Avila
Boxing professionally is dangerous for women or men.
South Dakota professional fighter Isis Sio was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center by ambulance following a knockout loss at the Orange Show in San Bernardino on Saturday.
On Tuesday, ProBox.TV announced that Sio had been upgraded and was able to converse, but still in serious condition.
Sio, 19, was fighting Jocelyn Camarillo in a scheduled four-round bout at light flyweight. During the first round of their contest the South Dakota fighter erupted with a barrage of 10 blows against Camarillo who exchanged blows almost evenly in the first 30 seconds.
In the next 30 seconds of their match Camarillo began to dissect and time the blows coming in from Sio and launched a counterattack that pinned the South Dakota fighter in a neutral corner and unleashed a six-punch combination to the head with five consecutive blows hitting the mark.
Sio crumbled to the canvas and it was immediately apparent she was in trouble. Quickly the referee motioned for assistance and within seconds the ringside physician and others with the California State Athletic Commission converged inside the ring. A few minutes later a stretcher was brought and paramedics quickly emerged.
Camarillo was seen celebrating immediately following the knockout win but quickly surmised the situation had turned grim. She could be seen looking over at her fallen foe and her happiness had drained from her face.
Almost every year a boxer dies from injuries sustained in a prize fight.
As a boxing reporter now going on 41 years of coverage, I’ve witnessed ringside Kiko Bejines, Jimmy Garcia, Pedro Alcazar, Leavander Johnson, and one other I could not remember that occurred in the 1990s.
All those names mentioned above were during world title fights. They were not mismatches where one fighter was fighting someone too advanced for his or her level. They were battles where the deceased refused to quit and suffered the ultimate sacrifice.
One of the warriors I remember most was Leavander Johnson, who even after the fight was stopped, told me just before suffering a convulsion that “I was winning” and then shaking before his cornermen grabbed him and escorted him to a dressing room.
It doesn’t matter if it’s one blow or blows absorbed over a number of rounds, punches by a professional fighter can be deadly for any fighter. Pro boxing is one of the most dangerous sports in the world. Along with car racing and sky diving, the sport of boxing ranks as one of those sports a participant can lose their life.
The number of minutes in a round whether its two or three-minute rounds does not diminish the danger in women’s boxing. On Saturday night Camarillo and Iso fought a two-minute round and at the 1:09 mark the North Dakota fighter endured the severe blows.
Though the minutes in a round is not a crucial factor in diminishing the danger, drug testing in boxing is very important for this main reason, it gives a boxer and unfair advantage that could lead to death.
Though I do not agree with the WBC’s refusal to allow three-minute rounds, I do completely understand their mandating drug tests before and after a women’s title fight. Women especially can be harmed by another female fighter using PEDs. Moreso, than in a men’s fight. PEDs give a slight advantage to men, but with women it adds a dangerous advantage.
