Alycia Baumgardner Leads Strong Female Fight Show in NYC on Friday
By David A. Avila
Alycia Baumgardner returns to Madison Square Garden and faces the very tough South Korean Bo Mi Re Shin for the super featherweight championship.
It’s Baumgardner’s third visit to the Garden.
Baumgardner (17-1, 7 KOs) will be battling Shin (19-3-3, 10 KOs) for 10 three-minute rounds for the IBF, WBO, WBA titles on Friday April 17, at New York City. ESPN will televise the MVPW-2 card.
Just a couple of weeks ago Most Valuable Promotions showed off its British version with Ellie Scotney, Chantelle Cameron and Caroline DuBois; all emerging victorious and delighting fans. Now It’s time to showcase its American talent.
Baumgardner will be facing Shin who fought England’s Dubois and lost by majority decision. The South Korean fighter is known for relentless attacks that might prove a tough task for the American fighter known as “the Bomb.”
The Ohio native Baumgardner is almost strictly a counter-puncher and that’s difficult to defend against a swarming style like Shin’s. This might be the champions toughest opponent yet.
One major thing in Baumgardner’s favor is her potent right hand that always tries to set up. It won’t be too hard to find a moment against a ravenous attacker like Shin. Don’t expect a boring match. Three-minute rounds will allow plenty of moments for either fighter to make a move.
Baumgardner has taken the Amanda Serrano route of three-minute rounds. Good for her and for women’s boxing.
In the co-main event, big hitting Shadasia Green (16-1) defends the super middleweight titles against New Zealand’s fleet Lani Daniels (11-4-2). It’s a contest that pits Green’s power against Daniel’s speed and guile. Green looked good against Savannah Marshall while Daniels lost to Claressa Shields but that’s nothing new. She faced the GWOAT and tried her best, but no one has been able to come close to beating Shields.
Three other female fights are on the bout sheet including Puerto Rico’s talented bantamweight Krystal Rosado-Ortiz who fights undefeated Fernanda Reyes of Mexico. Another is flyweight Natalie Dove meeting former world title challenger Maria Micheo. A third is newcomer Raquel Miller (13-0), a talented super middleweight who has been chasing Shields for years. Miller fights Adriana Dos Santos (6-3) in a six round affair. Miller has power and skill but is already 41 years old.
