Skye Nicolson Beats Mariah Turner in Australia

Skye Nicolson Wins is Ellie Scotney Next? and More News and Notes

Skye Nicolson returned home to Australia the conquering hero and demonstrated to the fans why she is considered the best in that country.

Behind a constant jab and lightning lefts from her wide southpaw stance, Nicolson (16-1) battered and bloodied Mariah Turner (12-2) for 10 rounds in front of a sold-out crowd at Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington.

It was smooth sailing for all 10 rounds.

“I knew Mariah was going to be a tough girl she had a lot of heart,” Nicolson said. “I knew she was going to be tough.”

The former featherweight world titlist dropped down in weight to 122 pounds soon after losing the title to Tiara Brown and quickly showed that the lower weight division is truly in her comfort zone.

Turner, a native New Zealander who lives and trains in Australia, couldn’t solve the formula to get into punching distance against Nicolson. Jabs and lefts from the interim champion battered and bloodied her nose by the third round. And still, Turner could not break the defensive barrier.

During the few times Turner broke through, she was immediately held by Nicolson then scolded by the referee for butting. Three times the referee warned for butting but never did the referee warn Nicolson against holding.

If undisputed super bantamweight champion Ellie Scotney agrees to fight Nicolson and it takes place in England, I doubt that holding will be useful. Scotney knows how to fight in close, while Nicolson has never learned that skill.

Immediately after winning the fight in unanimous fashion 100-89 on all three cards, Nicolson requested a match with Scotney for all the titles.

“Ellie Scotney you have all the belts,” said Nicolson to DAZN. “She has been at 122 for a long time. Come on let’s go.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who was present at the match in Australia, said that Scotney has mentioned moving up a weight division to featherweight.

“Hopefully Ellie Scotney will stay for one more big fight,” said Hearn.

Nicolson said big fights are goal.

“I want to be undisputed champion of the world. Now I’m ready to take over,” Nicolson said.
