Shadasia Green entered Friday night at Madison Square Garden as a unified titleholder and a clear betting favorite (roughly 5-to-1) against Lani Daniels. The bout was the co-main event on the MVP 02 card.
Eight of nine favorites won that night.
The Fight and the Stoppage
Green’s recent career had been a mix of promise and correction. She began 13-0 with 11 knockouts, hit a roadblock against Franchon Crews-Dezurn, then rebuilt momentum with two more wins and a narrow victory over Natasha Savannah Marshall to claim her titles.
Daniels arrived with a record of 11-4-2, with 2 KOs and limited stopping power. She had been stopped by no one.
As the rounds wore on, the fight settled into exchanges where defense seemed secondary. Both fighters were hittable. Daniels, however, proved more durable and more consistent.
By the ninth round, Green was in retreat.
Referee Eric Dali stepped in early in the round with Green pinned in a corner, absorbing punches and offering little in return. It was a good stoppage.
Green slumped to the canvas.
The Immediate Aftermath
Green was placed on a stretcher and removed from the ring. As that happened, music continued to play and the result was announced in customary fashion, a decision that felt discordant given the circumstances.
Inside the arena, the tone had already shifted, Backstage, the focus turned to her condition.
An initial statement from MVP’s Mike Leanardi offered cautious reassurance: Green was awake and talkative. That was the first encouraging detail.
She was then transported to the hospital for further evaluation.
Green’s Diagnosis and Status
In the hours and days that followed, we learned that Green had suffered a brain bleed measuring approximately 9 millimeters and was admitted to the intensive care unit. Treatment has been focused on reducing the swelling and surgery has not been required
Green posted the following on social media: “I passed out due to bleeding out of my brain. However I am in ICU on the road to healing. I’ll be back to get what’s mine 100 per cent covered.”
Green also stated: “With everything in me I want to thank those who had great concern and even the people who figured out during the fight something was wrong. I appreciate MVP and Nakisa being right by my side in the hospital.”
Most Valuable Promotions also stated: “MVP is working closely with Shadasia and her family. Collectively we want to thank the New York State Athletic Commission, Madison Square Garden and the attending hospital for their leadership and care.”
