Skye Nicolson vs Mariah Turner and More News
Australia’s top female fighter Skye Nicolson returns to action against fellow Aussie Mariah Turner in defense of the interim WBC super bantamweight title on Wednesday.
It’s also one step closer to the undisputed crown held by England’s Ellie Scotney.
The super athletic Nicolson (15-1, 3 Kos) seeks to use those assets against Turner (12-1) on Wednesday April 29, at the Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington. DAZN will stream the Matchroom Boxing card.
Nicolson needs a victory to hold her place in line.
“I feel really good at 122 pounds. I’m in position for undisputed,” said Nicolson about possibly facing Scotney next should she defeat Turner. “I love the challenge and to be in this position.”
After losing to Tiara Brown at 126 pounds, the speedy Aussie southpaw dropped down to 122 pounds to contend for the super bantam titles. In three contests Nicolson has proven that the drop in weight is not a problem for her. It might even be an asset.
Nicolson had cruised against most featherweight opposition until she met America’s Brown who forced the battle to be fought in close where the Aussie’s speed and length were neutralized. Brown won by split-decision in Australia back on March 22, 2025.
Clinching tactics can only take you so far.
Blessed with speed, agility and power, Nicolson has made the adjustments and is eager to face England’s Scotney in the near future. But first, she most defeat Turner.
“It’s a big step up in competition for her. I definitely don’t think she is a mark,” Nicolson told Combat Down Under. “I take this fight very seriously.”
Turner, 31, who fights out of Brisbane, did not have the extensive amateur career that Nicolson possesses, but she has defeated all but one foe. She also knows Nicolson is top notch.
“She is an incredible boxer. She is very smart and calculating,” Turner said of her foe. “I thought maybe one day I would fight Skye Nicolson. Now it is here.”
For Turner, this fight puts her on the world stage. For Nicolson, this puts her one step away from challenging for the undisputed super bantamweight crown.
“It seems surreal to actually be here,” Turner said. “She is only human so here we go. This is a lifetime opportunity.”
Nicolson seeks to show Australia her skills.
“I take this fight very seriously. I truly believe I can get a stoppage,” said Nicolson. “I want to show I can do it all.”
